KEY TERM and WHY YOU ARE INTERESTED IN IT
In this week’s assignment, we reviewed a brief history and the importance of global business. We also focused on culture and how it influences the business world nationally and internationally. For this week’s key term, I decided to focus on communications across cultures in regards to verbal and non-verbal communication. I chose to research in this area because I felt that was more targeted to the work that I do and would like to advance my career in. I currently work for a property management company as the Sales and Marketing Associate and on a daily basis I have to communicate with many people, all from different cultures. I have observed many behaviors from different cultures and remember often wondering if their displayed mannerisms and behaviors were culture related. Even though, I do not do work relating to international business, researching of verbal and nonverbal communication across cultures can give me an understanding of various cultures’ behaviors, how to interpret them more efficiently and also benefit my relationship with them. It is essential as a business employee, manager or CEO to research different cultures to become more aware and to guide one to behaving accordingly when in another country to prevent any non-favorable situations due to ignorance
EXPLANATION OF THE KEY TERM
Language and culture form, according to the late Henry Lee Smith Jr.,”is a seamless web. This means that they are real inseparable” (Kirch, 1979). Language is a significant part of verbal communication within global business. Spoken language helps share and collaborate views, opinions, and comments as well as recognize the purpose of the statement(s).
