Medical Marijuana

Medical marijuana is now being legalized across the United States in order to fight against cancer and combat other illnesses that were left incurable by other prescriptions. Recently, New York governor, Andrew Cuomo, announced that marijuana is legal for medical purposes in the state. Unlike some states however, New York's distribution of the drug will be limited to only 20 hospitals, all of whom have the ability to prescribe marijuana. Reviews of the plan have proved positive, as government officials believe it to be a building block in medical strategies, but one that will pass through its own trials and tribulations.

Not only were leading officials pleased to hear of the state's announcement, but also Long Island's Missy Miller. She said that her son, Oliver, suffered from a stoke that he still has implications from. He often has seizures, sometimes more than a dozen per day, that could prove to be fatal. Missy fears for her son's life with each spell, but because of medical marijuana, her anxiety could be put to rest. Unfortunately, it is not so easy. While most legalized states provide access to all those in need, the strain of marijuana soon to be implemented in New York, cannot aid children like Oliver. Missy, although pleased that the state is taking action, wishes that the plan could include her son as well.

To this day, there are 20 states that have already legalized medical marijuana. In each case, the drug can only be sold to people over the age of 21. Only certain amounts of it can be sold as well. Although New York has devised a plan of action, it still has yet to legalize marijuana. Governor Cuomo is currently acting on a law passed in 1980 that is more strict than other medical programs for marijuana. Under these guidelines and restrictions, Cuomo's system would work by the state health department determining which hospitals were to distribute the marijuana and which patients qualified for help.
