The organization I chose to work with is not an organization per se. It is a collection of community members who met at a church and decided to help the underprivileged and elderly in their community. The church is located in Newlands West and the members of this church who volunteer are from the church and live in the surrounding area. One of the members is a friend of mine that told me about what it is they do and I thought it would be the perfect place for me to volunteer at. Her name is Ms Luanshya Jacob and she runs this group of other volunteers. She has a lot of experience in health care and is employed at Parklands Hospital and is a registered health care worker. She delegates the work load to other members of this group. Her address is 509 Hillgrove Drive, Newlands West, 4037 and her contact number is 0846704363. Also her health care worker number is DBN 0321. This group of individuals realised 4 years ago that people from their congregation at church were in desperate need of help, both financially and emotionally and decided to do something about it. Funds are collected by donations and monies raised by having shows, fun-walks, bake sales and so on. The nature of my volunteer work is to help with distributing food, clothing and blankets and on some occasions to just listen and offer advice. I believe that by me having a theoretical understanding in psychological counseling would help with some of these people in despair. I also help with home repairs and house-hold chores to some of the elderly.
