I am Hui Xin. This essay is going to introduce some main festivals that we celebrate in Malaysia. There are three main races in our country, Chinese, Malay, and Indian. Each of the races is celebrating their New Year in difference ways. For example, Chinese and Indian are celebrating their New Year according of their own Lunar Calendar while Malay follows their Muslim calendar. 

As a descendant of Chinese, let us talk about Chinese New Year (CNY). It lasts for 15 days a year. Houses are cleaned and decorated by members of the family is this prior. Also, plenty of food is prepared and new clothes are purchased. Family members from out of town and far away will come home for the gathering. Offering and prayers to ancestors are made. A family reunion dinner will be held on the New Year eve and the dishes with auspicious meaning. During the New Year period, bad language and any unpleasant or sensitive topic is strictly discouraged (death and accident). It is always best to be in good behavior with good and auspicious thing. On the actual day, elders are giving red packet containing money to the children and those adult without married yet and playing fireworks at night (it is only legal during 1st and 2nd day of CNY in Malaysia)

Yee Sang, a special dish that is only served during Chinese New Year. Yee Sang contains many different vegetables together with many ingredients and decorated nicely. Once ready, people will toss the shredded bits into the air by only using their chop stick. It is very important that all tossed as high as it as it reflects the amount of good luck, health and prosperity they will receive.

 

As Malay, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Hari Raya means “Celebration Day”. Worker in the city return to their home town to celebrate with families and ask forgiveness from parents, and elders.
