The Paleo Diet

The Paleo Diet referred to as the Palaeolithic Diet or The Caveman Diet requires going back more than 10,000 years to the Palaeolithic period to discover their eating habits. Following a low-carbohydrate, high protein-diet full of fruit, vegetables, meat and nuts, the Paleo way of eating has a multitude of benefits compared to the highly processed carbohydrate obsessed diets that are current in the modern day. This essay will show why the Paleo Diet is better than eating processed food by highlighting what processed food is and what it does to the body and the benefits of eating whole nutrient rich foods that the Paleo Diet recommends.

The Paleo Diet allows people to eat a lot of fresh lean meats, fish, fruits, and vegetables, and healthier fats. The diet also allows eggs, nuts, seeds and healthy oils such as olive oil and coconut oil. Processed foods are not consumed on this diet, and since prehistoric people were hunter-gatherers, a not farmer the Paleo Diet does not include wheat and dairy or grains and legumes such as peanuts and beans. However, there is one main concern with a diet like the Paleo Diet. Because dairy products are eliminated, intakes of bone-building calcium are likely to be low. This means it’s important to eat plenty of other calcium-rich foods like fish with edible bones such as sardines and mackerel, green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, dried fruit and oranges.

The Paleo diet may reduce the risk of heart disease. Heart disease is the number one killer of women in Australia; women are three times more likely to die of it than breast cancer. Eating the paleo diet helps drop blood pressure, due to a reduction in salt as no processed food is eaten, and increase potassium due to more fruit and vegetables in the diet.
