Dear Mike Jones:

A health concern involving the drinking water in our community has been brought to our attention. The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) is the main federal law that ensures the quality of American’s drinking water. Under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), the EPA sets standards for drinking water quality and oversees the states, localities, and water suppliers who implements those standards.

Mr. Jones, take inconsideration that the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) was originally passed by Congress in 1974 to protect public health by regulating the nation’s drinking water supply. The law was then amended in 1986 and 1996, and required many actions to protect drinking water and its sources such as: lakes, rivers, reservoirs, springs, and ground water wells. The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) authorizes the United States Environmental Agency (US EPA) to set national health bases standards for drinking water to protect against naturally occurring and manmade contaminants that may be found in drinking water. The US EPA, states, and water systems work together to make sure that the standards are met.

As you can see, millions of Americans receive high quality drinking water every day from their public water systems which of course may be publicly or privately owned. Nonetheless, Mr. Jones, drinking water safety cannot and should not be taken for granted. The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) applies to every...
