Abstract

During the late 1990's, Boeing began studying replacement aircraft programs as sales for the 767 and the Boeing 747 slowed. The global airline market was disrupted by the September 11, 2001 attacks and increased petroleum prices, making airlines more interested in efficiency. The 787 was designed to be the first production airliner with the fuselage assembled with one piece composite barrel section instead of the multiple aluminum sheets and some 50,000 fasteners used on existing aircraft. The 787 is approximately 20 percent more fuel efficient than the 767. The efficiency would come from engine and aerodynamic improvements including lighter weight composite materials and advanced systems. The 787 Dreamliner New Technology systems will forever change the future of aviation.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a superefficient airplane with new passenger-pleasing features. It brings the economics of large jet transports to the middle of the market, using 20 percent less fuel than any other airplane of its size.

Because it uses 20 percent less fuel per passenger than similarly sized airplanes, the 787 is designed for the environment with lower emissions and quieter takeoffs and landings while traveling as fast as today’s fastest wide bodies, Mach .085 (Boeing, 2014).
