Allen Pinkerton was the first person that found a detective agency. He was also the one who would bring down the country’s most ruthless criminals. He tried to take down the James brothers in 1874 but on that day he failed to do so. (libary of congress, 2011)

Allen was born in July 21, 1819 in Glasgow, Scotland. At a very young age he started to get into politics and then he was forced to immigrate to our American land in 1842. He soon got settled with his wife in Chicago, during his time their he worked as a barrel-maker, later by accident he would soon find and discover a gang of counterfeiters and also their lair as well. Since he discovered them he was appointed as deputy sheriff and that is when his career took off. (libary of congress, 2011)

It didn’t take him long to move up into the criminal justice field, he soon became a special agent for the U.S postal office, catching criminals was easy for him and it continued to go very well for him. From there that is when he formed his detective agency, He made a motto for his agency which was called “we never sleep” it was a very good motto for him because that’s just what they do, they don’t sleep, instead they our out catching crooks. Not only was he a very well crime fighter, he also was a very committed abolitionist. 1858 he freed over 11 slaves from Missouri and he had an excellent plan to free them and get them to Canada, and he did just that. He raised enough money to get them all transported. (americas story, n.d.)

What would start the hunt in the James brothers was a train of robbery’s and a company by the name of Adam’s Express Company, he accepted and sent one of his detectives to go investigate them in Missouri. A single day after the detective arrived he was found dead and killed. The death then scared off the company but pinkerton never stopped. In 1875 he took a group of detectives with him and they...
