Disaster recovery is critical to business continuity regardless of business or size. In this scenario, XYZ Computers, hereafter referred to as the Company, has recently undergone a disaster in which the entire first floor was flooded due to a broken water pipe. The pipe burst after a period of heavy rain over the weekend. There is an assumption that due to the high water table in the area; the water had no place to go, thus flooding the first floor. The flooding caused extensive damage to the servers, which were housed on the first floor of the building. In addition to this event, the IST department of the Company’s computers has determined the need to develop various aspects of its network. The IST department processes daily records for payroll and all human resource records. IST processes records, on a weekly basis, for 10,000 employees. After processing, data is backed up to magnetic tape. It is assumed that tapes left on-site for storage. Secondly, IST’s servers are currently handling multiple roles. For instance, the payroll server also handles email for the entire organization. Servers are currently oversubscribed with applications and hardware resources over-utilized. Finally, IST indicated in its system documentation that there is no firewall deployed in the network. Based on the aforementioned factors, a disaster plan has been compiled to accomplish several goals. These goals are to create business continuity and disaster recovery protocols, establish a secure and efficient physical environment to house network hardware and assets, upgrade and improve current network equipment to improve hardware and utilization, and lastly to increase network security. This plan will address these key points and make recommendations on streamlining IST operations and disaster recovery protocols.
