Developing a Daily Practice Plan
Cover all areas in an organized fashion.
Do not exceed 20 minute periods.
Practice Plans should include these periods:
- Warm-up: Raise player's core body temperature
- Individual: Players learn and practice their techniques
- Special Teams: Kicking game is practiced
- Tackle Circuit: Practice the Fundamentals of tackling
- Group: Small segments of offense and defense practice against each other
- Team: Offense practices against the defense
- Cool Down: Team runs specific football drills for conditioning
Practice plan should be consistent.
All coaches should follow time structure.
Each period includes time segments for maximum repetition.
All coaches should contribute to the daily plan.
Practice means maximum activity for the players.
Off-Field Meetings
When The Coaching Staff meets away from the field, it's easier to make decisions.
Each coach's ideas can be brought up and views on the following subjects can be discussed:
- Offensive and defensive schemes and special teams play
- Terminology used in coaching
- Practice organization
- Game day organization
- Methods used to teach
- Individual responsibilities
Assignments (Determining Assignments)
Prior to the season the staff should assign a specific coach to serve as:
- Offensive position coaches for the line, the receivers, the quarterback and running backs
- Defensive position coaches for the line, linebackers and defensive backs
- Special teams position coaches for the specialist, the line, the offensive and defensive backs and the linebackers
This is an excellent time to determine which coach will serve as the offensive, defensive, and special teams coordinator.
Communication (Coaching Communication)
At meetings off the field, everyone is given an opportunity to speak.
The Head Coach may direct the discussions.
Once a decision is made, everyone on the staff must accept it.
