The devil’s peak redoubt was built at 1914, the overall structure was well planned and equipped. Talking about the outer appearance of the redoubt, it was of pentagonal shape and surrounded by stonewalls with small gun holes for the British army for shooting against the Japanese army. Inside the redoubt, there were different military facilities such as fortresses, basements for storage of gunpowder. To further achieve a comprehensive defence system, the British Army had set up an East Coast Headquarters for controlling the operations of the two forts and to monitor the marine situation.     Being an open area to the general public, Devil’s peak redoubt does face the problem of the tragedy of the commons. First, it is not well managed by the government, which can be seen by the litters being thrown everywhere and there are weeds grown in many areas in the site. This could tell there is insufficient cleaning work being done by the government in order to protect the environment, hence these will ruin the image of Devil’s Peak redoubt as an historical defence structure. Also, there are some unnecessary structures being constructed in the site in favour of the hikers, for example, barbed wire and a footpath for easier access. However, this may affect the outer appearance and lose the original style of the redoubt, which would not attract any tourists and locals to visit Devil’s Peak redoubt as an important spot in Hong Kong’s military history. All in all, it is seen that there are two major problems leading to such tragedy of the commons. One is lack of regulations being set up by the government to improve the situation, for example, the regulations of keeping the area clean to minimize the damage to the site. Another is the problem of inadequate knowledge of the general public to the Devil’s Peak, which can be done by publicizing the historical background of it to the public such as setting up boards in the site to introduce the brief history of the defence of Hong...
