UNIT 5 INSTALLING HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE
LESSON 1
Aim: To enable students to understand how to install hardware and software and to perform preventive maintenance.
LABS: Programming Labs.

11. Ergonomics
Ergonomics is defined as the study of human factors related to computers. It is concerned with fitting the job to the worker rather than forcing the worker to fit/ adapt to the job. People are devising ways in which computers can be designed and used to increase productivity and decrease health risks.
Ergonomics, therefore, helps users take steps to avoid physical and mental risks and increase productivity.
111. Physical Health Matters
Sitting in front of the screen for long periods of time may lead to physical problems. These can include eyestrains, headaches and back pains. Users can alleviate these problems by taking frequent rest breaks and using well-designed computer furniture.
The physical health matters related to computers that have received most attention recently are the following:
a. Avoiding eye-strains and headaches
b. Avoiding back and neck pains
c. Avoiding the effects of Electromagnetic Fields (EMF’s)
d. Avoiding Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
a. Avoiding eye-strains and headaches
Our eyes are made for most efficiently seeing things at a distance. However, monitors require using our eyes at a closer range for a longer period of time, which can create eyestrains, headaches and double vision.
To make monitors easier on the eyes:
1. Take a fifteen (15) minute break every hour or two (2).
2. Avoid computer screens that flicker.
3. Keep computer screens away from windows and other sources of light to minimise the reflected glare on the screen.
4. Special anti-glare screen (glare reducers, screen/ glare filters) are available. These are pinned in front of the screen.
5. Make sure the screen is three – four (3-4) times brighter than the room.
6. Keep everything that...
