Even though not all successful students conduct themselves in an ethical or committed manner, to succeed in college individuals need to have integrity and commitment. Learning these attributes will make a person successful in life as they are beneficial attributes to have when entering into the work force. Personal responsibility is the act of taking ownership for the result of your actions in an ethical and committed manner. It is the cornerstone to college success, which is built through one’s education.

The elements of personal responsibility are ownership of one's performance and their results, to complete assignments in a timely manner, to prepare for classes, look for extra help when needed, and not to place blame on any external factors. Life is filled with surprises and often it interrupts the “best laid plans.” However, if one does not attempt to plan their days, it is easy to become overwhelmed and have your classwork suffer.

Personal Responsibility is committing to classes, assignments and classmates. It is easy to apply to school and attend, but being responsible also entails designating time to complete assignments, studying, and collaborating with classmates to finishing team projects. More than anything, it is having the integrity to complete assignments on one’s own accord. It is often easy to find shortcuts and in some cases to have someone else do your work. Your character is what will separate you from other students and eventually from colleagues once you enter the workforce.

There has been a loss in taking responsibility for one’s action and blaming others for their shortcomings, which is unacceptable. Society has allowed individuals not to take responsibility for their actions. Because of this, some students do not feel the need to take ownership for their decisions and outcomes.
