Fiction and Business Paper

Non- Fiction literature can possibly be the greatest means of how to communicate life experiences. It can be an impactful tool to convey deep personal lessons and messages. Non-Fictional literate can be ultimately touching when realizing that the events actually took place and the individuals involved really experienced those events. The story “shooting an Elephant” by George Orwell is a good example of great Non- Fiction literature that not only entertains, but also holds the attention of the reader, while presenting a message for the reader to define. The plot of the story begins with a sequence of events that takes place when a young English police officer is put in a difficult situation and his character is tested. This story takes place in Moulmein, Burma in the early 1920’s. During this time, Burma was a British colony and the anti-European feeling seemed to be intense among the town’s people. The main characters in the story are George, a young, white, Englishman who happens to be employed with the imperial police in Burma, native Burmese villagers’ and what appears to be a run-a-way elephant. The author sets up the story by describing to the reader the environment and the mood. The local people disliked George because of whom and what he represented and he in return hated them for the way they ridiculed, insulted and made his job so difficult. George Disliked imperialism and the oppression of the Burmese people. George writes, “All I knew was that I was stuck between my hatred of the empire I served and my rage against the evil- spirited beast who attempted to make my job impossible”. One morning George was called upon to handle a situation in a nearby village. News came that a run a way elephant had destroyed some huts and was running wild.
