1. Introduction
Tourism is a growing industry and despite the economic benefit it poses; concerns are raised with regards to the negative impacts on environmental and social issues. Tourist bodies came up with another form of tourism – Alternative Tourism; to mitigate such negative effects and prioritize sustainability.
The essay discusses the need for alternative and mass tourism and how they contribute to sustainable tourism development. It outlines the need for tourism industries to pursue sustainability strategies, and how they will affect tourism in the future. It also highlights few examples of sustainable tourism directions taken by Thailand and Phuket. The essay concludes a set of arguments for pursuing a sustainable tourism agenda.
2. Review of Academic Literature
2.1 Sustainable Development
According to Brundtland (as cited in (Redek, Ograjensek, Kostevc, & Godnov, 2012) “the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. This is the universal definition known to all. However, (Kates, Parris, & Leiserowitz, 2005) defined that development has to be further branched out to the relationship between ‘what is to be sustained’ and ‘what is to be developed’ now and in the future.
Some factors which fall under the two categories - for e.g. nature, environment, resources, cultures, economy, equity and education. These factors have to be well-balanced, preserved and sustained in order for an area to develop.
Generally; there must be a compromise between those whom are concerned with preserving the environment as well as those whom value economic development. Sustainable Development should benefit all people and resources are to be distributed equally.
