Frame relay is a telecommunication service designed for cost-efficient data transmission for intermittent traffic between local area networks and between end-points in a wide area network. Frame relay puts data in a variable-size unit called a frame and leaves any necessary error correction (retransmission of data) up to the end-points, which speeds up overall data transmission. To configure frame relay you must do three things for successful function. The first step to successfully configure frame relay is to assign IP addresses to all of the serial ports on your routers. The central locations IP addresses for the router will be 172.16.1.129 and 172.16.1.130. The north locations IP addresses for the router will be 172.16.3.129 and 172.16.3.130. The south locations IP addresses for the router will be 172.16.5.129 and 172.16.5.130. The east locations IP addresses for the router will be 172.16.7.129 and 172.16.7.130. The west locations IP addresses for the router will be 172.16.9.129 and 172.16.9.130. The next step is to configure the frame relay encapsulation and disable inverse arp on the router. To do so you must issue two commands on the routers serial ports. The first command is ‘encapsulation frame-relay’ and the second command is ‘no frame-relay inverse-arp’. These commands must be issued on all of the routers. The final step is to set the frame mapping for each router. This can be accomplished by issuing the ‘frame-relay map ip <remote ip address> <local dlci number>’ command.
