1. Why do you think that CEO Howard Schultz is willing to persist in the provision of such benefits, even in the face of these external challenges?

According to the textbook “HRM as a means to contribute to profitability, quality, and other business goals through enhancing and supporting business operations.” Then the problem is how HRM enhancing and supporting business operation. The table on the text book page 6 explain the responsibilities of the HRM, and from the table we could see that the benefit section and health and safety section clearly list what HRM should do. (Hollenbeck, J. R., Gerhart, B., & Wright, P. M., 1997) Howard persist in the provision of such benefits is just strictly follow the rules which is a basic outline of the HRM.

Moreover, I have watch a YouTube video, according to Simon Sinek, the author of Start With Why, his speech mention about the function of the trust, Simon said that “a highly effective organization could let employees will do everything in power to make sure their customers feel happy and good because employees feel safe.” (Simon Sinek) And the benefit that the CEO of Starbucks offers could give their employees a safe feeling, so they could do a good job. Starbucks actually is not only a coffee seller, but also a symbol of service, so provide a safe environment and let the employees trust their jobs could help them put more effort into their work.

So what other benefit Starbucks could gain from persisting this behaviors. The answer is attracting labor force. According to Clarke, employee prefer go to the companies which has more and mature benefit system. Thus we could see it is not hard to understand that Howard is willing to persist these benefit for employees (Clarke, K. F. 2001).
