Aspects of Quality Control

Several elements must be considered when running a business, especially because the competition among companies has increasing significantly in the last decade. There is no current space to errors; any mistake committed can affect the company not only presently, but also in its future since the failure might affect the company reputation. For example, cases of recall in the vehicle industry dirty the company’s image for a long time. Therefore, in addition for this element’s list, engineers have been trying to maintain quality control on the top of their priorities. Seeking main causes of rejects and substandard quality products, engineers have found through statistics that three causes are responsible for most of the occurrences: flow break, machine failure and failure on the product design.

During the development of a production process, steps are created to define how the product is built, which is also called flow of the process. Flow break is result of jumping or missing one of the steps specified for the process, and its effects depends on the operation that is jumped. A checking process, in other words, a process created to measure some characteristic of the product, will not necessarily lead to a failure while a step that modifies the product will usually cause a substandard quality product when missed. However, it’s worth to note that despite modifying processes lead to more severe failures, flow break in checking process are more difficult to detect, thus the bad product might pass undetectable through the whole production process.

Secondly, production processes are becoming more automated, so machines are replacing people. However, even machines fail. Machine failures are usually caused by inefficient maintenance, whether because of the maintenance was not made properly or because it was not scheduled to be done at correct time. The effect of a machine failure also depends on the operation that it is responsible for; welding...
