Introduction
CASE 4.1
This case involves Mark Young a new department head of the painting division in a large hospital. Mark is hired by the Board of Directors to work as an independent contractor assessing not only the direct and indirect cost of painting services at the hospital but also to implement reorganization of the department. Mark’s main focus as the department head will be to organize staff set in place a standards of performance expectation for each employee.
At the start of Mark’s employee as painting department head he is extremely rigid with the tasks to be performed and does not seek or value any input from his subordinates. Mark views the need for such rigid nests because there is so little room for error within the environment of the hospital. As Mark begins to see development of a team he becomes relaxed in his style and presence. He enjoys his employee’s accomplishments and often rewards them.
Marks leadership within his department has improved the morale of his employees and is viewed by others as a successful department. Because of his ability to lead his employees by often engaging them off of the jobsite the painting service within the hospital is receiving higher customer rating than any other service. Mark has been very successful in his leadership ability of the painting department.
When Mark began his position with the hospital in charge of the painting department he clearly to the position of an authority compliance manager. This is supported by the fact that he was very rigid with his employees and was focused primarily on the task allowing no input from his subordinates. Mark needed to take this type of approach upon discovering that the department services were inefficient and costing the hospital far too much.
Over time Mark style did change as his team began to implement the cost saving measures and will focus...
