Managing in a Unionized Environment

Abstract: Labor unions are located all over the world in various organizations. Managing a union and non-unionized environment can be very challenging at times. I will discuss several functions and advantages of unions within organizations. Additionally, I will discuss the challenges managers are faced with and how to overcome them. Lastly, I will further discuss how to manage within in labor union environment.

Introduction

Managing in a unionized work environment can be a very challenging and complicated task. As we hear the word management, the following comes to mind: empowerment, dictation, making and enforcing the rules, and etc. “Management involves setting and accomplishing individual, group and organizational level business objectives through planning, leading, organizing and controlling resources. Managers need to think strategically, understand financial realities and industry-specific factors. They must know how to acquire, develop, motivate and guide their employees (Bond University, 2013).” In order to acquire the necessary skills to become a strong leader and manager, one must complete all necessary training and development stages.

Managers tend to build on their skills year after year in order for them to become more successful and allowing them to reach the highest point of their career ladder. On the other hand, while working as manager in a unionized environment, one must successfully prepare themselves for various situations and allegations that may arise. Strong progression and dedication of being a manager in such an environment will not only make you better but successful in the long run. There are various challenges that may arise while managing a unionized organization. I will briefly discuss various functions, advantages, challenges of a labor union, and how to manage in a unionized environment.
