Understanding the Community from a Social Worker Perspective

What is the significance to social workers being able to identify and gain an understanding of the community? As well as, what are the resources available in order to apply themselves accordingly towards various situations while assisting the people who live within various areas of the community?

The Role of a Social Worker in the Community

Social Workers are professionals assisting those within the community, mainly those living in poverty, fraught, and who are otherwise helpless. In most case scenario, social work involves enabling people to cope with their day to day lives while helping them with simple human necessities. It involves teaching and helping those who do not know what resources are available to them within the community; or who may not know how to go about obtaining and utilizing the resources (Kuther, 2014).

It is equally important for Social Workers to become familiar with federal and state laws that apply to social services. This means policy, practices, regulations and procedures. As well as ethics, displaying the use of critical thinking, and how to put it all together in preparation for community advocacy. Being proactive is essential for involvement as it will apply to research that Social Workers may conduct and partake in. In addition, making suggestions and assisting clients with making informed decisions is important.

Becoming a Social Worker means that she will need to become accustomed to the history of her community, learn the backgrounds of various ethnic groups, building structures, and agencies. Otherwise, how would a Social Worker be able to advocate for the people in the community without proper knowledge of it? How would a Social Worker know how to educate the people in the community of the many resources within it?
