English- Chains 1-15

The story begins with an introduction to two sisters, Isabel and Ruth. Their mother recently passed away from smallpox. Their owner Miss Finch also died. They believed they were now free because Miss Finch wrote in her will, that they could be set free when she passes. Mr. Robert Finch refuses to believe they were set free, and as Miss Finch’s only relative, he takes over the girls and sells them to a family in New York, The Locktons. The Locktons are a very wealthy and malicious couple. They are loyal to England. Soldiers inspect their home because they believe that they are working for the king. They are let go by the soldiers. Mrs. Lockton hits Isabel because her sister Ruth laughed at something Mrs. Lockton did. Isabel takes the hit because her sister could have a seizure if hit. Isabel then meets Curzon who’s Mr. Bellingham’s slave. He shows her the water pump and tries to convince Isabel to help the Patriots and become a spy. She also meets Becky. Becky is also the Loctons servant. She tells Isabel to stay away from Curzon. Isabel does a lot of housework. Her sister Ruth mostly stays with Mrs. Lockton and does stuff for her such as getting her water. This causes the sisters to not see each other often. One day Mr Lockton has his friends over and Isabel serves them drinks and food. She hides in the library to eavesdrop on their conversations about the British invasion. Isabel tells Curzon this information and also tells him where the Locktons hide their money. The rebels come to the house and look for where they hide their money but found nothing. They arrest Mr. Lockton over suspicion for helping the king. Mrs. Lockton faints and Isabel is sent to get Lady Seymour, Mr. Lockton’s very friendly aunt who treated Isabel very kindly. Then Mr. Lockton gets set free from prison and he and his wife get into a fight. He beats her, but she claimed she just fell. Shortly after Isabel serves the mayor of New York and...
