Abstract
Cybercrime
Cybercrime is the theft and/or destruction of information, resources, or funds via computers, computer networks, or the Internet. (Siegel & Worrall, 2012, p. 615) There are many forms of cybercrime, and they include cyber theft, cyber vandalism, cyber bullying, and cyber warfare. To me, a cybercrime is a crime that someone commits with the intent of invading someone else’s personal life to either defraud, deface, or attack them. Identity theft is a crime that is being committed more than ever, and the Internet makes committing this crime all too easy. Hackers can invade peoples’ bank accounts and credit cards since so much of this is done online nowadays. This is just one example of cybercrime in the United States. Other examples include online sexual predators, who create profiles on social media sites, such as MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter, and pose as someone they aren’t, to try and lure underage children to have sex with them. There are also people who create malicious software designed to corrupt your computer and render it useless. Viruses, works, and Trojan horse files are rampant, and as hackers become better at what they do, it becomes harder for us to detect these destructive programs. Cyber bullying is another crime that has grown in the United States in the last few years. Since children and young adults are allowed to have their own social media accounts, with little to now adult supervision most of the time, it’s very easy for cyber bullying to take place. Cyber bullying is willful and repeated harm done through the medium of electronic text. (Siegel & Worrall, 2012, p.620) Kids get online with the hope of fitting in, or making friends, and are instead often met with people who would rather make fun of them.
