I am chair of the selection Committee for an international company headquartered out of New Jersey. I have extensive overseas experience, and presently serve as VP Human Resources. We are currently looking for an expatriate to staff up and run a new branch of our industrial products business in China for a three-year assignment. We have narrowed it down to three candidate, each one bringing great attributes to the table. The issue at hand, is who is best qualified and who would best fit our need in its current state. After reading over their resumes, and narrowing it down from 12, I feel Gunther is our best candidate. Gunther is a VP in our German-based company which he started from the ground up. His degree is in anthropology, and also took classes in accounting. He is well liked, and is known for being well-organized. Gunther also appears to have no ties to where he is currently located, which would be a smooth transition to China. The other two candidates, both have degrees, have foreign relations experience, but neither have worked overseas before or opened a new business and appear to have ties to their current locations, making Gunther my choice.

Gunther’s undergraduate degree is in anthropology, which is the study of humankind in all its aspects, especially human culture and development. Even though this business is based out of China, the customers are from the Middle East and North Africa. Because Anthropologists , whose focus is on culture, believe it consists of the “individual world views, social rules, and interpersonal dynamics characterizing a group of people set in a particular time and place (ball, Geringer, McNett, Minor pg 94). By having this degree it gives him the benefit of understanding how to deal and work with different countries and the cultures that lie within them.
