The Perfect Mother

Like a hibiscus flower in my backyard, rich with bright radiant color, effervescent in beautifying nature and nurturing the offspring. Her smile brightens up a room as if witnessing the crack of dawn. At night she glows like a luminous diamond in the sky. ​She is a human being with a heart big enough to love the world. She blossoms all year with new found energy that never fades. She is my mother.

​ Growing up, I have always known her to be the one to feel my pain. Before I spoke a word she knew how I felt inside and outside. She is the comforter who speaks to me in a soft angelic voice so I am no longer scared. She shields me from the world’s danger with her knowledge as her weapon to protect me. She is my remedy when I am sick. As the hibiscus needs continuous feeding to bloom all year, her energy is from raising her family – my family.

I can recall a few instances while bed ridden for months due to a slight bent in my spinal cord. I stomped with my right leg and limped on the left leg. The doctors could not recognize what was wrong and how this was possible. The pain was never ending. The constant cries of agony and pain scoured through the four walls in our tiny family home. It was like a set of needles constantly stabbing through my spinal cord that ran down the hips into my right calf. The loud thumps of my right leg were no longer heard. My body lay still in the bed with many cotton fluffs surrounding me for some comfort. The aches had become unbearable and only narcotics could help.

I was teased, humiliated, and often known as a crippled child during the premature stages of my condition. I wanted nothing to do with school or anyone else for that matter.

Because of her unconditional love and her strong faith in God, she did not give up on me. My constant cries and outbursts did not faze her.

With her heavenly voice, she whispered in my ear with her left cheek compressed to my left cheek facing opposite directions...
