• Define Theory
Theory is defined as principals or explanations as to why one does something a certain way. “A set of concepts linked through propositions to provide an explanation of a phenomenon. Nursing theories are belief systems that guide practice.” (Schmidt & Brown, p. 124).
• We have many theories that apply to nursing. Do you think all nursing research should be based on one of these theories? Why or why not?
I am not sure how to answer this question because I am not sure what you are asking. Are you asking if all nursing research should be based on one particular theory, for example, “should all nursing research be based on Jean Piaget’s Cognitive development theory” or are you asking if all nursing research should be based on a theory? I will answer it both ways. My thoughts are that nursing research should not be based on one particular theory because there are so many out there and many of them work and work well. One theory alone is not sufficient to take care of the wide array of medical issues and with the technological advances and research available today there is more than one way to get to the goal set forth. In a lot of situations, I will have my way and you will have your way and neither way is wrong and both ways get the same end result. I will give you an example. In the office I work in I do EMG’s. Prior to me taking the responsibility of the EMG’s there was another technician that did them. His way of doing them was to start at the highest setting and come down on the voltage until he lost the response and then go back up. My way is to start at the lowest voltage and go up until I get a response. The end result is the same, however, we go about it differently and neither way is wrong. To answer the question in the other direction, as noted above as a definition of theory, “Nursing theories are belief systems that guide practice,” (Schmidt & Brown, p. 124) nurses and researchers must have a belief in something to guide...
