Introduction

Currently in the developed world, a debate is ongoing concerning whether women can actually attain equality with men a perception that began changing in the twentieth century when women started to get rights. In the developing nations however, issues concerning gender equality including; violence against women and girls, equal access to healthcare and vaccination, together with access to primary education continue to exist within these societies. This shows that even though gender disparities are found everywhere in the world, they are more intense in developing countries. This is because throughout history, gender responsibility has been relatively important and significant, but now due to the capitalist society we live in they are slowly being done away with. In developing nations however, women have continuously been given a lesser place in society than men for quite a long time. Women and girls in developing nations survive in an environment riddled with poverty which exposes them to gross inequalities coupled with injustices that are part of their lives from birth (Duflo 2012, 11). These injustices and inequalities include discriminatory inheritance practices, zero or low pay employment, denied access to education due to son bias, and physical violence. Based on this, it is clear that the structure of gender discrimination in developing countries that women and girls have to endure in the course of their lives is unacceptable in developed nations but very common in the developing societies. This is mainly because there is a huge confusion by women and girls who cannot be able to bridge the gap between the customary and formal laws in order to understand their rights.
