His Excellency George Washington

By: Joseph J. Ellis

In His Excellency George Washington the first chapter is focused on Washington’s early years in the military and how seriously he took his military leadership and missions. What I learned from reading this chapter was that George Washington did not win any battles in his early battles against the French in the Indian and French war. I also learn that Washington was a strict leader and had harsh punishments to who ever broke them. Another thing I learn was that Washington was not a good leader or brave man, but a foolish and ignorant according to the British and French people. The Americans viewed Washington as a brave and solid military leader and solider. I think one of the points that the author emphasis in was that George Washington was a discipline and harsh leader throughout his whole life. “Discipline was harsh. Those found guilty of drunkenness or lewd behavior sometimes received up to a thousand lashes.”

I found George Washington to be a very interesting man, because he was viewed differently by every country. British people saw Washington as a foolish and ignorant young solider and worthless to the British military. The French saw Washington as the Ideal villain and non-experience in military. The Americans saw Washington as a brave and Heroic colonel and experience military leader and very discipline. I also found interesting that Washington retreated from all his early battles while leading Fort Neccessity. I also found interesting that his secret love was Sally Fairfax but married Martha Dandridge Custis.
