THE THREE NETWORK CLASSES

1. An example of a class “A” network. A class “A” network has an address range of 1 to 126. The first 8 bits identify the network whereas the remaining 24 bits indicate the host within the network. We can use 103.168.212.226 for an example, whereas “103” identifies the network and the remaining “168.212.226” identifies the host. Class A networks are typically reserved for large institutions and government agencies due to the amount of allowable hosts up to 16,777,214. This can cause a nightmare for a network admin due to the large amount of sub nets that can be produced from this large number.

2. An example of a class “B” network. A class “B” network has an address range of anywhere from 128 to 191. The first 16 bits identify the network as opposed to a class “A” network schema which uses 8 bits. A good example of a class “B” network is 169.212.226.204 whereas “168.212” identifies the network and “226.204” identifies the host. Class “B” networks are typically assigned to medium and large networks.

3. An example of a class “C” network. A class “C” network has an address range of 192 to 223. The first 24 bits identify the network and the remaining 8 bits identify the host within the network. An example of a class “C” network is 192.168.13.1 whereas “192.168.13” identifies the network and “.1” identifies the host on the network. A class “C” network is typically reserved for small to medium networks mostly private and used in homes.

SUMMARY

In the three network examples depicted above class “A” networks can be daunting for most network administrators due to the large amount of addresses available and sub netting can be an exercise in patience. Then we have class “B” networking sub netting in this schema can be a challenge also but this scenario is limited to small and medium sized businesses so it is not so bad. Now onto the...
