Globalisation, Sweatshops and Indonesian Women Workers
Summary
The article examines the situation of workers in poor countries around the world, specially in Indonesia. It shows the terrible conditions of women working in the sweatshops, and blaming it all on globalization; new trade agreements and pacts made by the government are put in place with the aim of having a higher profit for global capital. Women were the most affected by globalization: low or absence of child care, bad condition shelters, and health care have made women suffer a lot. Indeed, Indonesia is one of the countries that has been affected the most by global capitalism for a long time now. The article states also that women and children consist of around 80% of the world’s poverty.
Economic
In most developing countries, women’s empowerment plays a big role in the economic growth. Although the situation has improved over the past years, a lot of women are still fighting for equality and equity in emerging markets. Many women are studying hard and getting better education, there is a huge gap between the wages of men and women despite their level of education being high. For countries like Indonesia, women don’t have an important role in the society, they do not make enough profits for the economic growth therefore they have lower salary, and lower occupational status. Also, because of maternity leave, women are most likely to miss a promotion.
Society
In countries where women are considered to have a lower status, whether because of the government regulations or of the social norms in the society, in this case women are much more abused and suffering from physical violence. Most of the women working in sweatshops are indeed under the age of 25 years old with low or no education, and working for over 12-14 hours everyday without any holidays except for 2 days...
