Critique of a Qualitative Study

This paper will be critiquing the qualitative study titled “The Experience of Patients Undergoing Awake Craniotomy” (Palese, Skrap, Fachin, Visioli, & Zannini, 2008). The sections to be reviewed will be title, abstract, purpose statement, problem statement, research question, hypothesis and literature review. Nursing is a life time of learning career. One must stay up to date on best practice and utilize the information that is available to support practice decisions. For one to do so, you must know the credibility of the writer and researcher. Research continues to move forward and improve our practice at the bedside. We do not need to start from scratch, however to build from what is already known to be truth.

Title

The title, The experience of Patients Undergoing Awake Craniotomy; In the Patients Own Words is meaningful. It informs the reader the information will be the first hand account of the person being awake during surgery”. In the title you can distinguish the paper will be a qualitative study. The title states the “experience”, which is unique to each patient. Readers will be looking for the effects of each human who participated. The emotional side to surgery is not given a lot of consideration, the surgery itself has traditionally been the focus. It is a great idea to learn how to include the patient.

Abstract

The abstract clearly and concisely summarizes the main feature of the report. (Polit & Beck, 2012, p. 112). The writer is informed of the number of participants and when they were interviewed. Their ages were not revealed or the individuals support system. The abstract gives a clear statement related to patients’ involvement during the surgery. The power of control comes forward in this paragraph, emphasizing patients like knowing what is happening and being able to...
