The Future of the City

The article “ The Future of the City” was written by Leo Hollis, and published in Aeon Magazine in 2013. The article is dedicated to the very important problem of future prospects of modern cities. The author of the article argues that cities, the way they exist now, are predestined to failure. In Hollis’ opinion, such cities as New York, London, Chicago, San Diego, and many others will be severely affected by natural disasters, and their inhabitants will die because they lack resilience. This article caught my eye right away and made me choose it over the other five because I am a positive supporter of environment protection, and by writing about this article I hope to call my readers‘ attention to the problems in our environment.

The author analyses historical and statistical data and concludes that cities are not just clusters of dwelling places. Instead, they should be treated as separate ecosystems. The author adds that in modern conditions these ecosystems can successfully survive and thrive, if new technologies are applied for their regulation. Hollis proceeds with the claim that we should pay more attention to the protection of our existing cities, in this way raising public awareness about the issue of global environmental disasters. In conclusion, the author once again mentions the importance of protecting our environment and reinforces his advice to take immediate action towards saving our earth.

While analyzing the rhetorical strategies of Leo Hollis, it is necessary to mention that he uses them rather effectively. The article has a well understood message supported by strong arguments. The author builds his article very logically and applies the method of cycled composition. One more benefit of this article is the fact that it is easy to comprehend.
