Human resource refers to the people within an organization. These people play a part in the setting up, day to day work function and even developing the company in its sector. Despite the advanced technologies and machineries available to help and increase efficiency in work function, people still plays an important role in the company’s work function.

To have a company depending on machines and technology, it might be workable for certain job scope like assembly line, weapon testing and assessing of dangerous environment, e.g. fire breakout and war times. However, these are task orientated job which has a fixed routine/pattern. One should also take note that despite being largely completed by machines, there is always a group of personnel who has invented the machines, came up with the technology and ultimately the person who is helping the operations.

Despite task oriented job, there are also other departments in the company like the Sales department, Marketing department, Customer Service department, and the Technical department among the rest which are not mentioned. The day to day work of these departments involves not only technical work (“technical” in this case refers to a specialise set of work skills with a fixed routine/pattern) but also but also interaction with different people from different company whose culture, ethnic and country background might be different. Care and caution will need to be when interacting as one action or gesture might mean different to other people.

Hence, with the need to maintain the interrelationship among the personnel in the offices and customer, Human Resource Management (HRM) is required and the 3 competitive challenges influencing HRM are Technology, Sustainability and Global.
