The Importance of Human Relations During Flight Operations

The main reason I returned to school was to enhance my job, career and personal life. In this paper I will discuss some examples from my past experiences as a work center supervisor and how motivation, communication and leadership apply to human relations on the flight deck of Navy aircraft carriers.

Motivation

Motivation is the act or process of giving someone a reason for doing something or the process of motivating someone. In today’s digital age there are more distractions which often hinder the way we perform both professionally and personally. Many times we are faced with coworkers not performing their job to the expectations of the organization. During flight deck operations aboard an aircraft carrier when a Sailor’s performance is poor, other Sailors lives can be in jeopardy. Brenda, a new Navy service member, was assigned to my work center during deployment. She quickly realized she was the only female and she didn’t mesh well within the first couple of months. She also exhibited problems with anxiety and depression, and Brenda’s attitude and behavior began to change. The cooperative teamwork within the work center began to decline because she wasn’t completing job assignments. Eventually, she decided to go talk to the chaplain about the problems she was experiencing. She made complaints because she felt ostracized and felt she was the only one working.
