Abstract

My Research paper is based on a Broad subject Intermodal Transportation in the Supply Chain. With the Supply Chain Being very vast and covering so many areas like logistics, where does intermodal transportation fit into ones supply chain? And what does intermodal transportation actually cover? I know that intermodal mean the use of different modes of transportation to deliver goods from origin to destination. There are different companies that use intermodal transportation with in the global economy what are their gains and what are the draw backs? There are so many pieces involved to moving freight from origin to destination what other pieces may fit in this puzzle what other types of equipment may be involved in the transport of freight. From my experience I know that there are way many pieces of equipment that may be involved in intermodal transportation then just Rail, Trucks, Ships and Trucks they are not mentions. There are Container handlers and forklifts and cranes that also fit into the equation. This research paper is will discuss and look further into intermodal transportation.

In the supply chain there are vast areas that cover the supply chain as a whole, one part being the intermodal transportation functions. This research covers that that function and the other areas that are not discussed. Since the 60’s there has been an effort to integrate separate transport systems through intermodalism. Intermodal transportation involves the transportation of freight in an intermodal container or vehicle using multiple modes of transportation such as truck to ship or ship to rail. This entails lesser handling of the freight itself when changing modes, products have an increase in security and less damage or loss.
