BUS660 – Negotiation and Dispute Resolution

Group 4 – Group Presentation

Case: Breach of Wedding Vow

Background:

Nam, 29-year-old IT engineer, is working for Passion Online Game Software (Vietnam) Co., Ltd. He was the Champion of the 2008 Country Online Game Play competition where he met Hien, a 25-year-old Vietnamese literature teacher. As talent met beauty, they felt in love and decided to marry early 2009.

One year later, Hien claimed that her husband, Nam had breached his wedding vow that he would “love her, support her in sickness and in health” and thus, she wanted to divorce.

Hien claimed that Nam did not pay enough attention to her and instead, he spent most of his time at home playing online game. In addition, Hien suspected that Nam was having an online love affair because of his strange behavior – often having telephone conversation with someone at late nights when she went to bed. Nam claimed that he was living up to the agreement, that playing online games was part of his job and that Hien, as a wife, did not understand him at all. A cold war started few months ago and they did not talk to each other.

Hien complained what was happening to her mother, Mrs Linh, a 49-year old lady. Despite the mediation effort of the poor mother, a conflict between young couple could not be resolved still. As a last hope, Mrs Linh proposed that the couple should meet with Mr Terence, a respectful 55-year-old Chairman of Association of Marriage and Family (AMF), before they take further legal action. Mrs Nam suggested that his boss, Mr Kevin, would also join the meeting and his wife, Hien agreed. Mrs Linh would also attend the meeting.
