In the year 2000, Bell Atlantic and GTE Wireless completed a merger to form the largest wireless telecommunications carrier in the United States, while providing the nation’s first ever, large area 4G LTE communications network. To remain competitive in the telecommunications industry, Verizon requested a review of its human resources policies and practices to better align them with business strategy. This paper will examine the business practices of Verizon, and identify the areas where better alignment would benefit the industry moving forward. This realignment of human resources management (HRM) “tools” will help to move Verizon into the future maintaining their position as the most innovative telecommunications organization in the industry.
