Write a 100- to 200-word response to each of the following questions. Provide citations for all the sources you use.
* What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?
Discrimination defined by Schaefer (2012), “is the denial opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for arbitrary reasons” (p.61). Prejudice is an attitude or notion about a group people based on negative ideas and beliefs. A stereotype is an overgeneralization of a group and labeling the entire group without taking in to context the individual. Schaefer (2012) tells us, “Unlike prejudice, discrimination involves behavior that excludes members of a group from certain rights, opportunities, or privileges” (p.35). Prejudices lead to stereotyping which in turn leads to discrimination. The negative belief or attitude causes one to make an overgeneralization that leads to the denial rights and opportunities.
* What are the causes of discrimination?
There are many cause of discrimination. Discrimination is a learned behavior that is passed down through generations. Children learn to discriminate by watching other children, adults, and through societal views. As parents we often unwittingly or consciously push our beliefs and ideals on our children. These ideals become so ingrained that they take on a life of their own and manifest in future offspring. Another cause of discrimination is prejudice. Prejudice is belief that one’s own group is superior to another group (Schaefer, 2012, p. 33).The feeling of superiority will cause one to have a negative attitude towards another The prejudices are based on race, ethnicity, age, gender, religion, disability, and sexual orientation.
