In the state of Maryland CPA responsibilities are checked and overseen by the Maryland Board of Public Accountants. This board is also responsible for the establishment of codes of ethics in Maryland and ensuring that this ethical standards are meet. The consequences or penalties for ethical violations in Maryland vary from revocations to suspensions and even fines or a pair of such consequences depending on the gravity of the offence.

Some of the ethical violations together with their penalties are;  violation of Business Occupations and Professions Article, Annotated Code of Maryland, Section 2-315(a)(1)(xii) and COMAR 09.24.01.06(I)(5) (failure to respond to inquiries during the Board's investigation of these complaints), penalty was revocation and fine. Violation of Business Occupations and Professions Article, Annotated Code of Maryland, Section 2-315(a)(1)(ix) and (xii); and COMAR 09.2401.06(I)(1) (engaging in monetary transactions in property derived from specified unlawful activity, wire Fraud, false Statements and willful failure to collect and turn over tax), penalty was revocation. Violation of the Business Occupations and Professions Article, Annotated Code of Maryland, Section 2-315 (a)(1); COMAR 09.24.01.06(G) Competence and Technical Standards (1) and (2) for preparing a deficient financial statements and issuing improper auditor's reports, the penalty was two months of suspension. Clearly from these and other penalties to ethical violations. The state of Maryland is against all forms of unethical misconduct.
