Abstract

1. Describe what changes you would suggest in terms of the current network type / structure and how you would lay out the benefits of the changes you recommend.

2. Describe why you would suggest connecting all current and new client computers using twisted pair cable instead of staying with the current coax wiring structure.

3. Discuss the possibility of using fiber optic cable instead of either twisted pair cable or staying with the existing coax wiring structure.

4. Research the costs involved with making these changes to the network (not including the cost for buying more computers) and determine whether or not there is a cost benefit.

In a network of this size I would suggest replacing the current coax cable peer to peer network with a cat 5e client/server network. The client expressed a need for future expandability without a drastic change in the network. Although the change from coax to cat 5e would require new cable runs and new equipment I don’t feel as if it is the change is drastic. The new cat5e network would be easier to troubleshoot than the current coax cable network, and greatly increase the current network speed. The greatest benefit from the change would be in the handling of shared resources on the network. With new client/server setup all the resources to be shared on the network will be centralized in one location. Network users would have access to the most current versions of shared documents. Passwords in turn could be kept to a minimum do to the fact that users would not need to obtain passwords to individuals’’ workstations to get access to the data they need to work with. The client also stated that did not have a dedicated IT person on staff so I would strongly suggest that they hire one especially...
