1984

London is now a run down city where Winston Smith lives and works. The world is being controlled by the party, and Big Brother is at the head of it all. In 1984 several important messages are portrayed to the reader warning against overly controlling government, technology, and censorship.

Throughout the novel Winston is constantly being watched. Every room he goes into there is always a telescreen. The thought police are able to hear or see what ever goes on inside the room at any point in time. This represents the constant watch of the government. There is no way to turn it off only down therefore the population is always being fed propaganda. When they say war is peace, they mean that while they are at war everyone is more united. So they are constantly being involved in war to have this effect. Freedom is slavery refers to the communistic feel of the party. You can only succeed if you are with others, by yourself you will fail. Because people can’t see what is going on, just makes the party more powerful.
