Film Review: The Conjuring

With its critical and commercial success, The Conjuring proved to be one of the scariest horror films in years. The Conjuring brings back the 70’s supernatural horror film such as The Exorcist, Poltergeist & The Amityville Horror (Itself inspired from one of Warrens’ famous case) with its brilliant script, and amazing cinematography. Director James Wan, who’s famous for directing Saw, Dead Silence & Insidious, has successfully keep the audiences in a constant state of dread by building the suspense in a way that doesn’t give away the plot & giving a good in-your-face scare.

Based on a true story, The Conjuring follows the Perrons family, moving to a new house in a rural Harrisville. Things get ugly when the Perrons start to experience supernatural activities like doors opening by itself, portraits falling of the wall. The Perrons decided to call Ed & Lorraine Warren who are husband & wife paranormal investigators who’ve investigated many cases (which some of them are controversial) to help them before the supernatural activities gets worse.

The Conjuring isn’t the typical horror movie where there’s a lot of gory, questioning whether ghosts are real, and with a cliffhanger ending. It’s an amazing change of pace for a horror film with an unusual side story and brilliant acting performances by from Patrick Wilson (who’ve collaborated with director James Wan in Insidious and its upcoming sequel) &Vera Farmiga.

James Wan’s direction in The Conjuring is stylish and realistic compared to his other works. Wan pays homage to the old classic horror films with its long continuous shots, slow-moving zooms and odd camera angle placement and it has definitely brings the audience attention closer and intensify the fear factor within them.
