The Pursuit of Happiness and Liberty

The word liberty has been tossed around by many people and used many times, but what does it really mean? The dictionary defines liberty as freedom from control, interference, obligation, restriction, and hampering conditions. Many people have attempted to make this dream a possibility for the whole world; from Nelson Mandela to Bono. But no one has been able to accomplish this in recent history as much as Barack Obama.

Barack Obama is the 44th and current president of the United States. He is also the first African American to hold the office. The Declaration of Independence preamble states “that all men are created equal”. President Obama took this quote to be true and exercised his liberties and ran for President of the United States. By doing this, he is setting an example for all civilians who thought they would never amount to anything because he, too, came from humble roots. He united the country in a rally to vote for him by showing them the liberties that they didn’t know about. Evidence of this is the election of President Obama; that a black man can become President of the United States. President Obama has had a major impact on the country and the world in the short time he has been in office.

In this country, he has helped get the economy back on track with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act less than a month after his inauguration. “By making bold and wise investments in healthcare, energy and education, and restoring fiscal accountability to government spending, we will cut costs for American families and businesses, create good jobs that can’t be shipped overseas, give our children the education they need to be competitive in the global marketplace and leave our grandchildren a legacy they can be proud to inherit.” On the energy front, Obama promises to fight climate change, invest in clean, renewable energy, and to chart a new energy future.
