Abstract

This paper will establish Electronic Medical Records (EMR’s) as effective methods of communication in health care setting. There are several methods of utilizing them effectively to provide a constant system of communication between doctors and health care staff, without the requirement of handwritten orders and information. This data is then securely stored in a specific location, providing ready access and retrieval of patient data. The paper will also incorporate the use of social media as a viable means of information sharing and collaboration.

Communications Modalities

Electronic Medical Records refers to a digitized and computerized system of maintaining patient data. The EMR was designed to provide an increase the effectiveness and productivity of medical providers, while reducing documentation errors by reforming the handwriting process of orders and progress notes.

The implementation process of EMR’s is an expensive investment that has created a demand for trained healthcare IT professionals. It is considered an evolving subdivision of the healthcare workforce. Implementation of an EMR reduces administrative expenses that cut into returns for healthcare providers, reduces the cost of keeping a staff dedicated to maintaining paper-based records, and increases the provider’s ability to render care to additional patients.

In the event a patient moves from one area to another or doctor-to-doctor, the patients’ medical information can transfer with the patient, quickly and correctly. This ability ensures that the patients’ information is accessible when it is needed.
