In this lesson, you learned how the U.S. began to turn from isolation to imperialism. Complete the following written assignment to show your understanding of these changes.

Select three events from the list of five given below - one showing isolationism, one showing intervention, and one showing imperialism. Using complete sentences, write one paragraph describing the event and explaining whether it should be categorized as isolationism, intervention, or imperialism. In a second paragraph, explain the reason for the U.S course of action in each event.

* The United States annexes Hawaii in 1900.

* The United States declines to give aid to Hungarian patriots in 1849.

* The United States proposes the Open Door Policy in 1899.

* The United States annexes Samoa in 1899.

* The United States attempts to mediate in the Venezuela-Great Britain dispute in 1895.

The United States annexes Hawaii in 1900; this is an example of imperialism because Hawaii was nothing but an island and the United States had gone there to take over, and added them as a state. The United States added Hawaii to the country because it was simpler to spy on Japan from the location and from 1000 miles away, they added them after the Japanese bombed the USA.

The United States proposes the Open Door Policy in 1899; this is an example of Intervention because the open door policy stated that all European nations, and the United States, could trade with China. This policy was recommended because it allowed multiple imperial powers access to China. Through the acquisition of the Philippine Islands, and when the compartment of China by the European powers and Japan seemed imminent, the United States felt its commercial interests in China threatened the U.S.

The United States annexes Samoa in 1899; this is an example of imperialism because Samoa wasn’t part of the USA and they sent some warships there to take over Samoa even when Germany was in control. In the...
