Step 1: Purpose and Scope of Study

Bandon Group, Inc. is a family owned distributor of copiers, electronic printers, faxes, and other office equipment. The company was started by Bud Bandon in Phoenix in 1953. By 1995, Bandon had grown to four divisions, in four different markets in the western U.S. With each division president responsible for developing sales and marketing strategies to meet the needs of their customers for their particular market segment, this decentralized sales strategy created duplication of effort and caused a great deal of extra expense. In addition, with its current business model, the central IT staff was too small to provide data migration, network support, technical support, and training for four different solutions.

Other large copier dealerships have implemented ERP solutions, including SAP and the administrative information systems of Oracle ERP. These ERP solutions provided administrative systems grounded in relational database technology that allowed cross-functional integration. This integration included support for front-end applications such as CRM, which were integrated with the ERP systems (Sumner, 2005).

The competition is moving toward e-Business solutions. E-Business enabled web based supply ordering, service call entry, and meter click reporting. In the current fragmented environment, it was almost impossible for Bandon Group to move toward e-Business. E-Business requires a foundation in administrative systems supporting order entry, service call management, customer service, and supply ordering, the foundation ERP systems were not in place at Bandon Group, Inc. (Sumner, 2005).
