PATAGONIA- PASSION FOR THE OUTDOORS AND FOR PEOPLE

1. According to Maslow's hierarchy, which basic needs does the Patagonia culture meet? What would it be like to work at Patagonia?

Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs derived from wanting to understand what motivated people. It has been determined that people are equipped to meet specific needs, and once those needs are attained, they are more than likely to move forward to accomplishing a new set of needs. The Hierarchy of needs based on the original pyramid is: Physiological needs - air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sex, sleep. Safety needs - protection from elements, security, order, law, limits, stability, freedom from fear. Social Needs - belongingness, affection and love, - from work group, family, friends, romantic relationships. Esteem needs - achievement, mastery, independence, status, dominance, prestige, self-respect, and respect from others. Self-Actualization needs - realizing personal potential, self-fulfillment, seeking personal growth and peak experiences (McLeod, 2007).

According to Maslow’ Hierarchy, the basic needs that Patagonia Culture meet are primarily from social, social, esteem, and self-actualization needs. These needs are met by providing each member with the ability to be a part of an organization that is designed to provide a healthy work environment, while also contributing to their cultural environment. This business is based on collaboration, openness and simplicity. At Patagonia, you are considered a member of the team and your contribution to expanding the brand does not seem to go unnoticed. They are an informal culture, where they are employee focused, and opened to providing their customers with high quality product.

From my perspective, working at Patagonia would be a new adventure. The idea of the flexible working arrangements, relaxed dress code and the onsite day care is very appealing. It...
