Unit 3 Lecture Study Guide

1. List the 4 primary tissue types and give the general characteristics and functions of each one.

Epithelium, Connective, Nervous, and Muscle.

2. How are epithelial tissues classified?

They are classified by cell shape and number of cells.

3. How does the type of epithelial tissue relate to its function? Give at least 1 example of where you would find each type of epithelial tissue.

simple squamous epithelium: air sacs in the lungs

simple cuboidal: kidney tubules

simple columnar: inner lining of the digestive tract

pseudo stratified columnar: inner lining of the respiratory tubes

4. Differentiate between exocrine and endocrine glands. Give an example of each.

Exocrine glands secrete product into ducts. The ducts open onto some surfaces. (Sweat glands)

Endocrine glands secrete product directly into tissue fluid or blood. (hormone glands)

5. What is the difference between apocrine, merocrine and holocrine glands? Which is the most common?

Apocrine- By membrane budding.

Merocrine- By exocytosis. Most common.

Holocrine- By membrane rupture.

6. Describe connective tissue’s intercellular material.

It contains water, fibers, and matrix.

7. What are the 8 main types of connective tissue? Briefly describe each.

Loose Connective Tissue- Holds organs in place and epithelial tissue to others.

Adipose Tissue- Stores energy in the form of fat.

Reticular Tissue- Form soft skeleton that support the lymphoid organs.

Elastic Tissue- Allows stretching of organs. (Lungs)

Areolar Tissue- Used for support and loose packing.

Cartilage- Provides support more dense than muscle, but less dense than bone.

Bone- Store minerals, and allow movement.

Blood- Transport oxygen through the body.

8. Order the types of connective tissue from most...
