Religion Essentials

What is religion? A question asked by many but comprehended by few. Religion is also a word we hear almost every day and for many people, their world revolves around it. To me religion means many things. It refers to my beliefs, my relationship with the one God and the practices and prayers that I use to communicate with him and follow his word. Religion is difficult to correctly define because there is not correct definition for this word. The meaning lies within the eye of the beholder.

One tradition that is practiced in many religions is sacred reality. All religions are concerned with the deepest level of reality and for most religious group, the core of origin of everything is sacred. In other words, most religions hold one or multiple individuals to the highest and call them “God” or Gods”. I, myself am a Christian and do believe in one God. In fact, he is the only God according to my religion and many others holy individuals are all associated with God, but never comparable to him. (Maloy, 2014, ). 

Another tradition or key essential to religion is a belief system. A belief system is when multiple beliefs fit together into a substantially complete and systematic interpretation of the universe and the human beings place within. In other words, it’s a series of beliefs that directly pertain to a specific religion and those beliefs are practiced and followed by the individuals who revolve around them. (Maloy, 2014, ). Some other characteristics to religion are ethics, rituals and central myths. Ethics are something that we live with and live by every day and it is similar with religion as well. They are rules about how human behavior should take place. Rituals are beliefs that are enacted to make real of through ceremonies. Many religions have different rituals they perform sometimes daily, hourly or weekly. For instance, in the Muslim religion, they are supposed to pray to “Allah”, their god, multiple...
