Case Study – NASCAR’s Racing Teams

Module 6

In many teams there are different ways to pull your team together and have them work effectively. A pit crew chief from NASCAR was able to do this effectively and show this by his team’s victories on the track. This is a man that knows that it takes a team to accomplish a goal not just one person.

In many ways Evernham’s leadership tactics shows characteristics of high-performance teams and teamwork advanced. The first characteristic that is shown in high-performance teams is models positive team member behaviors. He does this by reading leadership books that help improve him as a leader. They set a clear and challenging direction with what is need to get the car back on the track, and the use of keeping goals and expectations clear is what is needed to get done so the car spends the least amount of time in the pit. He also used the introduction of useful information by giving them ideas on teamwork (Schermerhorn, 2012). He also gives positive feedback by rewarding the team not just an individual. He does this by always splitting the money between the entire team instead of just keeping it for himself or splitting it with just a few people (Schermerhorn, 2012). He also makes his people feel like a team when they meet by sitting them in a circle instead of standing in front of them. This helps them feel they are stronger as a team then by themself (Schermerhorn, 2012).

With how Jeff Gordon’s team is said to act there are many things I would expect if I was the new pit crew chief. Though these qualities are the same things I expect out of my guys that I run. The first quality is the ability to work together. Without teamwork, everyone fights each other and nothing gets done. The next is an open line of communication.
